The Theatre – On October 31st about 40 of our school’s students accompanied by two teachers headed to Ústí nad Labem to see classical theatre piece by Charles Dickens called David Copperfield. Some may say that it is not something special, but there is a catch on this one. The whole play was in English, meaning that if you did not grasp what dialogues meant you were bound to not get how actors switched between roles by changing clothes and sceneries. Thanks god that was not my case. When we arrived I was really worried that I won’t understand a thing, especially after I found out that actors are all native speakers, whom I have trouble to understand. My worries faded once the play itself started. Even as native speakers, actors did not speak too fast – as I expected them to – nor did they have some heavy accent which would make the play unlistenable to. Though I have to admit that once they started to sing, the amount of words I understood decreased measurably. Overall I can say that the time we spend on this “school trip” was worth it. Even with five actors only the theatre company managed to pull us into the story and keep us there whole two hours that the play lasted. I hope to repeat experience such as this one some time in the future. |
